We offer the same premium organic rye berries used in our own substrate production. Each batch is sold in 5-pound quantities and triple-rinsed to remove dust, dirt, and other impurities.

Preparation Instructions:

  1. Soak: Use a ratio of 1 part rye to 3 parts water—bottled or filtered water is recommended. Soak for 24 hours.

  2. Boil: After soaking, boil the rye berries until they’re tender to the tooth. Ignore the myth that rye only needs 10 minutes of cooking—this is simply not true. The grain is ready when it reaches the right texture.

  3. Cook Time: Typically, the rye will double in size after cooking. Avoid bursting the kernels; a few splits are normal, but too many indicate overcooking. Depending on the source farm, cooking times can vary from 10 to 25 minutes.

Currently, our rye berries average a 20–25 minute boiling time for optimal results.

Sterilization Instructions:
For sterilizing grain, use a quart-size Mason jar fitted with a spawn jar lid. Add one pound of cooked rye berries per jar. Cover the tops of the jars with foil to prevent moisture from dripping in during sterilization.

Place the jars in a pressure cooker and sterilize for 2 hours at 15-18 PSI. Allow the jars to cool completely before handling. Do not shake or move the jars while cooling, as this can cause steam to escape from the substrate and potentially damage the filter.
