There are many species of mushrooms that grow on wood, and they are often referred to as wood decomposers because they break down the complex organic compounds in wood and convert them into simpler forms that can be used as nutrients by other organisms. Here are some examples of mushrooms that grow on wood:

  1. Shiitake (Lentinula edodes): Shiitake is a popular edible mushroom that is native to East Asia but is now cultivated all over the world. It grows on logs and stumps of deciduous trees such as oak, maple, and beech.

  2. Oyster (Pleurotus ostreatus): Oyster mushrooms are another popular edible mushroom that grows on wood. They are commonly found on dead or dying trees of various species, including oak, poplar, and willow.

  3. Reishi (Ganoderma lucidum): Reishi is a medicinal mushroom that has been used in traditional Chinese medicine for centuries. It grows on the logs and stumps of hardwood trees such as oak, maple, and elm.

  4. Turkey tail (Trametes versicolor): Turkey tail is a bracket fungus that grows in overlapping clusters on dead hardwood trees. It is often used in traditional medicine and is also being studied for its potential anti-cancer properties.

  5. Lions mane (Hericium erinaceus): Lions mane is a culinary and medicinal mushroom that grows on hardwoods such as oak and maple. It is known for its distinctive appearance, with long, shaggy spines that resemble a lion's mane.

These are just a few examples of the many species of mushrooms that grow on wood. Each species has its own specific growing requirements and preferences, so it is important to research the needs of a particular species before attempting to cultivate it. Our wood based mushroom substrate grow bags are great for growing any of the above mushrooms.
