User Guide
User Guide
In a well-sanitized monotub, mix your substrate at a 50% spawn to 50% casing-mix ratio. Fluff the substrate thoroughly, then lightly smooth the surface with your fingers—do not pack it down; it should remain loose and airy.
Place the lid on the monotub and avoid opening it until the substrate is fully colonized and mushrooms begin to form. Once you see early pin development, remove the cover and gently fan the interior with a piece of cardboard to promote fresh air exchange. Aim to fan 3–4 times per day.
Excess moisture during the growth phase can lead to tall stems with undersized caps, so maintaining proper airflow is important. You may also use a small computer fan to gently pull fresh air through the monotub, ensuring steady air circulation.

Premium 5-lb Bulk Casing Mix Bag – Ready-to-Use Sterile Coco Coir & Vermiculite Blend
Give your mushrooms the optimal “finishing layer” they deserve. Our 5-lb Bulk Casing Mix Bag features a chef-quality, mycology-tested blend of coco coir pith, fine vermiculite, food-grade calcium, sulfur and worm-castings tea — all sterilised and ready to boost yields, flush after flush.
Why This Casing Mix Stands Apart
As a chef-turned-mycologist, you understand that substrate preparation is a science and an art — just like cooking grains for top-tier performance. We applied the same rigorous standard here.
- Renewable and premium materials — The base is coco coir pith (a sustainable by-product from coconut husks) gently blended with fine vermiculite to hold moisture, provide structure and promote gas exchange.
- Active fertility built-in — We’ve enriched the mix with worm-castings tea for beneficial microbes, plus food-grade calcium and sulfur for buffering pH and helping support healthy fungal primordia formation.
- Fully sterilised and ready to go — No pre-treatment required. Arrives vacuum-sealed, sterilised, and ready for immediate use — just open and apply in your fruiting chamber or tray.
- Chef-level yield performance — When used correctly (1 part spawn : 1-2 parts casing mix), you’ll benefit from our formula’s optimized structure: a top layer that supports robust pinset, healthy fruit-body development and high-quality flushes.
How to Use the 5-lb Bag in Your Workflow
- Prepare your fruiting chamber: Whether you’re using a monotub, tray system or fruiting tent, ensure clean conditions and ambient fruiting parameters as per your existing SOPs.
- Layer spawn and casing: Start with a 1–2″ layer of casing mix, then a layer of colonised spawn. Alternate until your spawn is covered by a final casing layer. This mimics the layering technique you’d use when building a fine grain dish — depth, evenness and consistent contact matter.
- Maintain moisture & gas exchange: Mist or fan flush as needed. The vermiculite in the mix helps retain moisture evenly and the open structure aids CO₂ escape — just like aerating a risotto!
- Monitor and harvest: After inoculation, expect primordia formation and healthy pinset—when the caps just begin to open and separate, you’re ready to harvest.
Who This Product Is For
- Professional cultivators and chef-mycologists who demand a clean, high-yield casing layer without compromise.
- Enthusiasts upgrading from DIY mixes (coir alone or straight peat) who want a performance boost without the extra prep time.
- Anyone looking to scale their operation: the 5-lb bag offers generous volume for multiple fruiting chambers, saving you both time and money.
Why Buy From Shroomability
You’ve told us your background — 30 years cooking exotic meats, perfecting grain techniques, turning mycology into another craft. We match that. Our products are manufactured and packaged in the U.S., shipped promptly, vacuum-sealed and double heat-sealed for freshness. We vet every bag for sterility and performance — because we know contamination, uneven hydration or substrate compaction aren’t just nuisances — they’re yield killers.
We also provide a free Monotub Build Guide with your purchase: step-by‐step instructions to get the most out of this casing mix, especially if you’re layering spawn in a tub system or transitioning into tray/RAFC workflows.
