Hydroton (also called LECA – Lightweight Expanded Clay Aggregate) is a popular growing medium used in hydroponics, Mushroom fruiting chambers, aquaponics, and gardening. It consists of planter-sized roundish clay pellets that are lightweight, porous, and reusable. See the photo where a nickel was placed to reference pebble size.

🔍 What is Hydroton? Hydroton is made by heating natural clay to over 2,000°F (1,100°C) in a rotary kiln. During this process:

  • The clay expands like popcorn.
  • The outer shell hardens.
  • The interior becomes porous, making the pellets lightweight and able to retain moisture.

  🌱 Key Properties

  • Inert: pH-neutral and chemically stable.
  • Reusable: Can be cleaned and used again.
  • Porous: Retains moisture and air, promoting healthy root development.
  • Lightweight: Easy to handle and transport.
  • Good Drainage: Prevents overwatering or root rot.

🌿 Common Uses

1. Hydroponics

Used as a primary medium in systems like:

  • Deep Water Culture (DWC)
  • Ebb and Flow (Flood and Drain)
  • Drip systems
  • NFT (Nutrient Film Technique)

Hydroton provides root support and allows nutrient solution to flow freely while retaining some moisture and oxygen.

2. Aquaponics

Used in grow beds to support plants while allowing fish waste-based nutrients to circulate and be absorbed.

3. Soil Amendment

Mixed into soil or potting mix to improve:

  • Aeration
  • Drainage
  • Root oxygenation

4. Propagation

Hydroton is often used for starting cuttings and seedlings, as it maintains moisture while preventing damping off.   🧼 How to Clean and Reuse Hydroton

  1. Rinse thoroughly to remove debris.
  2. Soak in a hydrogen peroxide or vinegar solution to disinfect.
  3. Rinse again before reuse.

⚠️ Tips for Use

  • Rinse well before first use (it is dusty).
  • Monitor pH and EC in hydro systems, as build-up may occur over time.
  • Don’t overfill containers; allow space for expansion when wet.
